ST PATRICK'S DAY 2026

The famous 20th century Irish writer, James Joyce was also an accomplished singer and he played the guitar. Some of his written work incorporated musical rhythms.

Philippe Loli, the guitar professor at the Académie Rainier III de Monaco and a member of the famous Aïghetta Quartet, which was formed in 1979 in Monte Carlo, has performed worldwide and will perform a song at the start and end of the event for our St Patrick's Day 2026 celebration.

The photo above shows H.S.H. Prince Albert II of Monaco with students from the Académie Rainier III following their concert in 2019 . To the fore of the photo are Philippe Loli, the guitar professor and Noëlle Vera, the harp professor who retired in December 2025. We wish Noëlle a very happy and musical retirement and thank her from the bottom of our Irish hearts for her dedication to her students, who, under her guidance, performed a harp concert at the Princess Grace Irish Library each year to mark St Patrick's Day.

Join us for our celebration of Irish culture and music! Enjoy dramatic performances by actors from the Monaco-Ireland Arts Society who will interpret the journal entries and letters exchanged between Ireland’s famous writers. They will weave together an event evoking their conversations of the era to give insight to their literary lives. Extracts include from correspondences between the writers James Joyce, W.B. Yeats and Oliver Joseph St. John Gogarty who were contemporaries.

This year we will also enjoy a short performance on the guitar by Philippe Loli who will liven up the beginning and end of the event. Not many are aware that the renowned author James Joyce played the guitar in addition to writing Ulysses!

Our thanks to Virginia Disney Connell, co-founder of the Society who is directing the artistic performance.
