Dr. Alexander L. Ames is Director of Outreach & Engagement at the Rosenbach Museum & Library in Philadelphia. He will moderate the discussion with the program’s panelists from Monaco.
This year, the Rosenbach Museum & Library has launched a programming partnership with the Princess Grace Irish Library in Monaco, to trace the global impact of Irish literature and culture—and the many links that connect Philadelphia, Monaco and County Mayo, Ireland, today.
The Rosenbach explores the lasting legacy of the Irish diaspora. We are delighted to bring you in partnership with the Kelly House in Philadelphia and the Rosenbach Museum & Library the recording of a memorable evening in Princess Grace Kelly’s childhood home in Philadelphia to learn about two of the most famous Irish immigrant families in American history: the Kennedys and the Kellys.
Hosted by Rosenbach Board of Directors members Gage Johnston and Thi Phan, this immersive, the lively event began with Celtic harp, 1960s pop hits, and a wine reception in the stately rooms of The Kelly house, which was recently purchased and restored by her son, His Serene Highness Prince Albert II of Monaco.
In the cozy drawing room the conversation took place with Irish Studies scholar Mary Burke, author of Race, Politics, and Irish America: A Gothic History (Oxford University Press 2023). Professor Burke and Dr. Alexander Lawrence Ames, the Rosenbach’s Director of Outreach & Engagement, discussed the unexpected connections between the Kellys and the Kennedys, comparing their cultural contexts and afterlives, and placing them in the perspective of Irish immigration history.
